Network Protocols Glossary
What is a network protocol? Protocols are the rules of the road for how data exists and moves on the network. They allow many different systems and computers to communicate.

What is Windows Update Delivery Optimization WUDO Protocol?
WUDO was designed to optimize the distribution of Microsoft updates. It operates by leveraging peer-to-peer sharing, allowing devices to download updates and applications from other devices on the same network or the internet, rather than solely relying on Microsoft's servers.
What is the purpose of WUDO
WUDO functions as a distributed content delivery network (CDN) within the Windows ecosystem. Here's a simplified breakdown of its process:
Content Identification: When a device requires an update or application, it first checks its local cache. If the content is not available, it contacts the WUDO service.
Peer Discovery: The WUDO service identifies potential peer devices that have the required content. These peers can be on the same local network or other devices connected to the internet.
Content Distribution: The device downloads the required content from the identified peer. The content is divided into smaller chunks, and these chunks are downloaded from multiple peers simultaneously to improve download speed.
Caching: The downloaded content is cached on the device for future use and potential sharing with other devices.
